Students
The clinic delivers civil practice training for student attorneys as they have direct responsibility for handling cases from the initial telephone interviews to concluding representation. They handle landlord and tenant, domestic relations, employment, and other complex administrative cases. The clinic is an excellent law school experience for students seeking additional professional development.
For more information on enrolling in the Civil Practice Clinic, contact Professor Kathleen Mckee.
Clients
Low-income residents of the Tidewater Area, which includes Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach, may receive representation from Regent Law’s Civil Practice Clinic.
The clinic gives priority to cases referred by the local Legal Aid programs and Genieve Shelter, which is a shelter for victims of domestic abuse. Acceptance of any case depends on income and problem eligibility, the merits of the case, and the availability of student clinicians to staff the case.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the clinic’s services, an individual or household must be income eligible, which means that their income must not exceed 130 percent of the federal income poverty guidelines. Visit the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services website for HHS Poverty Guidelines to determine if you are eligible.
The client must also have a legal problem that the clinic can manage: consumer protection, tenant issues, government benefits, and orders of protection for victims of domestic violence. The clinic does not manage the following types of cases: criminal cases or specialty areas, such as bankruptcy, civil rights, employment discrimination, foreclosure, medical malpractice, personal injury, and real estate.
